6 Reasons Why You Need To Share Your Goals With Someone You Admire
Sometime during my career as an enlisted service member, I decided I wanted to become a military millionaire and TRULY retire after 20 years in the USAF.
And somewhere along that journey, I decided to tell others. Specifically, people I admired. Because I thought if I valued someone, I would let them down, as well as myself, if I did not fulfill that goal.
Also, before I told my peers and loved ones, I was hesitant. I thought it would bring along jealousy, envy, or isolation because I was in a better financial situation than others.
But I was wrong…
I received nothing but positivity…
Below are the benefits I experienced from sharing my dreams with people I value in my life.
1. Accountability
After I shared my dreams with others, I felt a sense of accountability to make them happen.
I didn’t want to let down the people who believed in me and my ability to achieve my goals.
So what do I do?
I lived, ate, and slept all things real estate and stocks. I woke up early to learn as much as possible and stayed up late to take action on what I learned.
And it paid off!
I was able to buy my first 3 properties by the time I was 36 years old, and I am now a military millionaire!
If it wasn’t for the accountability I felt to the people who believed in me, I would have never taken the massive action required to achieve my goals.
2. Confidence
When you share your goals with others, who believe in you, it gives you confidence. And we all know that confidence is critical to achieving our goals.
When I started my real estate investing business, I was so scared I would fail. I had no idea what I was doing and was afraid I would make a costly mistake.
But when I confided in my close friends about my goals, they believed in me and told me I could do it. Those conversations gave me the confidence I needed to get started and ultimately be successful.
If you don’t have confidence in yourself, it will be tough to achieve your goals. So share your dreams with those you admire and let them help build your confidence.
3. Drive
There was a newfound drive once I told others about my plans to become financially independent while serving.
I was determined not to let down myself or those who believed in me. I was motivated to take massive action and do whatever it took to achieve my goals.
And that’s exactly what I did…
I worked harder than ever and took massive action to achieve my goals. I woke up at 4 AM every day to do research, replaced my Buffalo Bills YouTube viewing with books like “The Book on Rental Property Investing,” and before bed, I read the latest blog post on the Bogleheads forum.
Sharing your goals with others will help light a fire under you and push you to take the actions required to make your dreams a reality.
4. Networking
This was a big one for me. Finally, I could network with amazing people who have helped me achieve my goals.
For example, I met my realtor and property manager just because I told someone in my inner circle about my goals. If I had kept my plans to myself, I would have never met them, and they have been instrumental in helping me achieve my goals.
I’ve also been able to meet other like-minded individuals who are working towards similar financial goals. We share ideas and resources and support each other on our journey to financial freedom.
You must surround yourself with people doing big things to achieve big things. Sharing your goals with others opens up opportunities to network and meet new people who can help you achieve your dreams.
5. Mentorship
One of the coolest parts about telling others about my story was that I have been able to improve other people’s lives.
I’ve shared what I’ve learned with others and helped them achieve their financial goals. It’s rewarding to help others achieve the same level of success I have.
For instance, when I was a TSgt, I was able to help a SrA get out of $60,000 in debt! And now that I am an MSgt, I have been able to help others pursue their goals of financial freedom and making extra money while enlisted.
If you share your goals with others, you have the opportunity to change their lives for the better and help them achieve things they never thought possible.
6. Reach Your Goals Faster
Last but not least, sharing your goals with others can help you reach your goals faster.
Sharing your plans with those you admire will hold you accountable and ensure you stay on track. They will also give you ideas and resources that you may have never thought of before.
For example, I told my friends that I had a plan to save and buy 3 homes outright in 10 years. And because I shared my goal with them, they were always asking me how I was doing and giving me ideas on how I could save more money while I served. In the end, I was able to achieve my goal in 8 years because of their help.
If you want to reach your goals faster, share them with others and let them help you along the way.
FAQ
Should we talk about our goals?
Absolutely! Sharing goals with someone is the best way to get accountability and mentorship and reach your goals faster. It can make you want to be dedicated and unwilling to give up. Also, just hearing a person’s praise can give you the boost you didn’t know you needed.
Why should you tell people your goals?
There are many reasons why you should tell people your goals. Some of the reasons include networking, being more driven, and having greater confidence. So next time you have your to-do list and goal setting, it might be a good idea to verbalize those long-term and big goals with your social network or social circle. You’d be surprised how the help of others, such as a family member, can give you a clear picture and a better chance to fulfill your plan.
Are you more likely to achieve your goals if you tell people?
You are more likely to achieve your goals if you tell people. This is because you will be held accountable and access resources and ideas you may have never thought of. For instance, if you set goals to be a multi-millionaire in a few years and didn’t tell anyone, you could experience the adverse effects of your inner critic, sabotaging all the hard work you have been doing. But if you said your great idea to a close friend, you could have an accountability partner that could provide positive reinforcement and a sense of purpose and keep you focused on your big dream.
If you announce your goals to others, you are less likely to succeed?
On the contrary, announcing your long-term goals to people you look up to can increase your likelihood of success. For example, when you share a new goal such as weight loss, your team members could help you with a clear focus, maybe time management, and help you produce better results in the long run. Goal sharing is often good and will help you with progress and goal commitment.
What do you say when someone reaches their goals?
When someone reaches their short-term goals or lifetime goals, the right way to approach this situation is to say, ” congratulations on reaching your goal!” or “I knew you could do it!”. You can also say, “I’m so proud of you,” or “You’re an inspiration.”
